Pain can often be treated with heat
or cold. Our sensation of pain may be influenced by competing
stimuli. In cooling down a scalded part of the body with an
ice-pack, the cold stimulus is being superimposed on the scalding
stimulus. Cold is also ideal in aiding treatment of inflammation.
Contrary to this, heat relaxes the musculature and enhances
blood circulation. It can be successfully used for treating
muscle tension and cramps. |
Protracted or strong pain, especially when of undefined cause,
always requires concrete medical supervision. Light
to moderately strong pain with known origin can be treated
successfully with prescription-free pain relievers. The most
well-known active ingredient against pain is acetylsalicylic
acid. Its effect is based on the interplay of various factors
responsible for emergence
and directing of pain as well as inflammation. It thus acts
in a number of ways in a pain relieving, anti-pyretic and anti-inflammatory
fashion. |
